Y-tunnus Field for Gravity Forms

Y-tunnus Field for Gravity Forms brings a field for the Finnish company identifier Y-tunnus (Business ID in English) into Gravity Forms, the form plugin for WordPress. The identifier consists of seven digits and a check digit. The field checks it on your own server on submission and so catches typos before the identifier ends up in your data. A check digit is a digit calculated from the other digits that reveals typos.

In the ISO 6523 identifier list, an international list of identifier types for organizations, this identifier has the scheme number 0037. If you want, the field also checks the open data of the Finnish Patent and Registration Office (PRH) and the business information system YTJ to see whether the identifier has been issued.

Who it is for

Who benefits.

The field is for forms in which business customers or suppliers from Finland enter their details, for example for billing addresses or for onboarding new suppliers. It is also for developers who need a validated Y-tunnus in the settings of their own plugin.

You gain two things. Typos and wrong identifiers are caught as soon as the form is submitted, not later in your data. And your entries contain only identifiers in the correct form. That is a reliable basis for your customer data, your invoices and your e-invoices, meaning invoices as structured files that software can read.

The check works in two stages. The first always runs, the second only if you switch it on.

What the field does for you

  • You find the field Y-tunnus in the form editor in the field group e-Invoicing Fields and add it to your form like any other field.
  • It checks every identifier on your server. It must consist of seven digits and a check digit, and the check digit must match the other digits.
  • Your customer can enter the identifier with or without a hyphen, just as it is written in Finland.
  • If you want, it also confirms the identifier with PRH/YTJ. You then know the identifier has really been issued and does not just look right. You do not need a key for this. Alternatively, the lookup runs through your invoicePress account.
  • Developers use the same check as a field type on the settings pages of their own plugins. It is available outside a form, too, and nobody has to rebuild the rules.

What it does not do

  • It does not fill in other fields of the form. It does not copy the name or address from the register.
  • It does not store the responses from PRH/YTJ.
  • It does not make your form depend on PRH/YTJ. If PRH/YTJ is unreachable at the moment, your customer can still submit the form.
