Corporate Number Field for Gravity Forms

Corporate Number Field for Gravity Forms brings a field for the Japanese Corporate Number (法人番号) into Gravity Forms, the form plugin for WordPress. The field checks the thirteen-digit number against its check digit on your own server on submission and so catches typos before the number ends up in your data. A check digit is a digit calculated from the other digits that reveals typos.

In the ISO 6523 identifier list, an international list of identifier types for organizations, this number has the scheme number 0188. If you have entered an App ID, the field also asks the Japanese National Tax Agency whether the number has been issued. The App ID is an access code that the National Tax Agency issues for its lookup interface.

Who it is for

Who benefits.

The field is for forms in which business customers or suppliers from Japan enter their details, for example for billing addresses or for onboarding new suppliers. It is also for developers who need a validated Corporate Number in the settings of their own plugin.

The benefit for you is clean data. Typos and wrong numbers are caught on submission, so your entries contain only numbers in the correct form. Your customer data, your invoices and your e-invoices (invoices as structured files that software can read) can rely on that.

The table shows the two stages of the check. The first always runs, the second you add when you need it.

The field works without an App ID, too. It then checks the length of the number and the check digit.

What the field does for you

  • You find the field Corporate Number (Japan) in the form editor in the field group e-Invoicing Fields and add it to your form like any other field.
  • It checks every number on your server. It must have exactly thirteen digits, and the first digit must match the others as the check digit.
  • If you want, it also confirms the number with the National Tax Agency. This confirms that the number is not only correctly formed but actually issued. The lookup runs either directly through the agency’s Web-API, that is, its lookup interface, or through your invoicePress account.
  • Developers get the same check as a field type for the settings pages of their own plugins. They can use the field outside a form, too, and do not have to rebuild the rules themselves.

What it does not do

  • It does not fill in other fields of the form. It does not copy the name or address from the register.
  • It does not store the responses from the National Tax Agency.
  • It does not make your form depend on the National Tax Agency. If the National Tax Agency is unreachable at the moment or the App ID is missing, your customer can still submit the form.
  • It does not check the Japanese registration number for consumption tax (T number). That is a different number from the Corporate Number.
