SIRET Field for Gravity Forms

SIRET Field for Gravity Forms brings a field for the French company number into Gravity Forms, the form plugin for WordPress. The field checks the number against its check digit on your own server on submission and so catches typos before the number ends up in your data. A check digit is a digit calculated from the other digits that reveals typos.

The field accepts either a SIREN or a SIRET. The SIREN has 9 digits and identifies a company as a legal unit; the SIRET has 14 digits and identifies a single establishment. If you have set up access, the field also asks the Sirene register whether the number really exists. The Sirene register is the company register of the French statistics office INSEE.

Who it is for

Who benefits.

The field is for forms in which business customers from France enter their details, for example for billing addresses, dealer accounts or onboarding suppliers. It is also for developers who need a validated SIREN or SIRET in the settings of their own plugin.

For you, this means: typos and wrong numbers are caught the moment the form is submitted, not when you start working with the data. What gets saved is in the correct form. That is a reliable basis for customer data, invoices and e-invoices, meaning invoices as structured files that software can read.

Two stages work together. The check on your server always runs, the lookup after it only if you switch it on.

On your server only Plus the lookup in the Sirene register
Structure and check digit ✓ ✓

Active companies only, if you want – ✓

The field works without an API key, too. It then checks only the check digit. An API key is an access code for the interface of a service.

What the field does for you

  • You get the field SIRET / SIREN and add it to your form like any other field. Your customer enters the number in blocks, three blocks for a SIREN and four for a SIRET. That makes it easy to keep track while typing.
  • It checks every number on your server with the Luhn method, the calculation rule for the check digit of these numbers. It also knows the exception for La Poste.
  • If you want, it also confirms the number in the Sirene register. That way you know the number is not just correctly formed but actually issued. The lookup runs directly with INSEE or through your invoicePress account.
  • If you want, it only accepts companies and establishments that the register lists as active. That way businesses the register no longer lists as operating stay out of your data.
  • It keeps the register data for 35 days in a table of its own. So the same number is not looked up again on every submission.
  • If you want, it also writes the register data into a Gravity Forms form. There you can view the data just like ordinary entries.
  • Developers get the same check as field types for the settings pages of their own plugins. They can use the fields outside a form, too, and do not have to rebuild the rules themselves.

What it does not do

  • It does not fill in other fields of the form. It does not copy the name or address from the register.
  • It does not check VAT identification numbers. The VAT ID field of this series is meant for those.
  • It does not make your form depend on the register. If the register is unreachable at the moment, your customer can still submit the form.

How it works

From entry to saved record

1 · Entry
your customer types the number
2 · Check on your server
check digit (Luhn)
3 · Optional: Sirene
Does the number exist?
4 · Saved
with a checked number
How the field checks an entry on submission: first on your server, then, if you want, in the Sirene register, and after that the entry is saved.
