ABN Field for Gravity Forms

ABN Field for Gravity Forms brings a field for the Australian Business Number (ABN) into Gravity Forms, the form plugin for WordPress. The field checks the eleven-digit number on your own server on submission, using the check method of the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), and so catches typos before the number ends up in your data.

If you have entered a registration key, the field also asks the Australian Business Register (ABR) whether the number is registered there.

Who it is for

Who benefits.

The field is for forms in which business customers or suppliers from Australia enter their details, for example for billing addresses, dealer accounts or onboarding new suppliers. It is also for developers who need a validated ABN in the settings of their own plugin.

You gain two things. Typos and wrong numbers are caught while your customer is still in the form and can correct the entry. And your entries contain only numbers in the correct form. That is a reliable basis for your customer data, your invoices and your e-invoices, meaning invoices as structured files that software can read.

The check works in two stages. The first always runs, the second only if you switch it on.

The field works without a key, too. It then checks the length, the first digit and the checksum.

What the field does for you

  • You find the field ABN in the form editor in the field group e-Invoicing Fields and add it to your form like any other field.
  • It checks every number on your server. It must have exactly eleven digits, must not start with a zero, and the weighted checksum according to modulo 89 must be correct. The checksum is a value calculated from all digits that reveals typos.
  • It shows a separate message for each of these errors. So your customer knows exactly what to correct.
  • If you want, it also confirms the number in the Australian Business Register. You then know the number is really registered and does not just look right. The lookup runs directly with the ABR or through your invoicePress account.
  • Developers use the same check as a field type on the settings pages of their own plugins. It is available outside a form, too, and nobody has to rebuild the rules.

What it does not do

  • It does not fill in other fields of the form. It does not copy the name or address from the register.
  • It does not distinguish between active and cancelled numbers. An ABN with the status “Cancelled” counts as confirmed because the register has an entry for it.
  • It does not store the responses from the register. If the online check is switched on, the field asks again on every submission.
  • It does not make your form depend on the register. If the register is unreachable at the moment or the key is missing, your customer can still submit the form.

How it works

From entry to saved record

1 · Entry
your customer types the number
2 · Check on your server
length, checksum
3 · Optional: ABR
Is the number registered?
4 · Saved
with a checked number
How the field checks an entry on submission: first on your server, then, if you want, in the ABR, and after that the entry is saved.

If the check fails, the field tells your customer exactly what is wrong, so they can correct the entry. There is no demo to try on this page yet. The manual shows you step by step how to set up the field.
